The Puglian pumo is a masterpiece of traditional craftsmanship that embodies the history and culture of Puglia. Also known as the Salento pumo or good-luck pumo, it has been a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in Puglian homes for centuries.

Every ceramic pumo is handmade by a ceramic craftsman in Grottaglie, the fruit of a centuries-old tradition passed down from generation to generation. You will never find two that are identical. ⚠️ Important, please read before ordering. Every pumo is handmade from start to finish by a ceramic craftsman. If the piece in the colour or size you want is not ready when you order, it is made specially for you: that is the nature of a handmade object. We always keep you updated by email on the status of your order — “In preparation” if the pumo is ready and is being shipped, “In production” if it is being made for you. 📏 The width is always in proportion, as in the photos. Up to 12 cm the inner base is flat and unglazed; from 14 cm upwards the inner base is hollow and glazed, with a hole. The larger the size, the more detailed the leaves and base. Quantity discounts: you see them by selecting the size on the product, and they are applied automatically in the cart.

On the product you will find the main colours: from 8 to 20 cm in white, blue, red and green; the 22, 26, 28 and 30 cm in white. To choose from the full colour chart below, or to combine several colours in one order:

🎨 The 26 and 28 cm pumi are made in white only: for other colours, contact us before ordering. Personalisation with initials is only possible on the light colours, white and cream. The purple (porpora) colour is no longer available.

The meaning

The symbolism of the pumo

The shape of the pumo is that of a rosebud about to bloom, surrounded by delicate little leaves. In Puglia you see it on the baroque balconies of the historic town centres, proudly displayed as a good-luck charm for the home.

The bud is a symbol of rebirth, abundance, prosperity and fertility. It can also be associated with an egg, the Easter symbol par excellence. Today Puglian ceramicists still make it by hand, just as their fathers did: a truly unique object.

The craftsman

Shaped and decorated by hand

Every pumo is born in an artisan workshop in Grottaglie, where the pieces are still thrown on the wheel, glazed and decorated by hand. Mixing and pairing the glazes is a skill passed down from father to son, a jealously guarded secret that preserves the art of Puglian ceramics.

July 2018, Beijing. Pugliapromozione, the tourism agency of the Puglia Region, chose us to represent Puglian identity in China: our pumi accompanied the regional tourism councillor to Beijing for an international event.

Everything you need to know

Are the sizes exact?

No, and they cannot be: every pumo is handmade. There may be a difference of about 1 cm more or less. It is not a flaw, it is a quality: proof that every piece is unique.

What if the pumo I want is not ready?

It is made for you: a handcraft process of wheel throwing and glazing. Your order moves to the status “In production” and we update you by email. If you are in a hurry, contact us before buying.

Can I choose colours other than the main ones?

Yes. Look at the colour chart on this page, add the quantities to the cart and write the colours in the NOTES field at checkout.

Are there other sizes besides those shown?

All sizes are in the height menu on the product page.

How are they shipped?

Each pumo is individually wrapped in bubble wrap and packed securely in the box. The shipping cost depends on the weight: to see it, build a cart.

What if it arrives broken?

In the unfortunate event that a pumo arrives broken, we ship it again at our expense.

Do you offer gift packaging?

Pumi are packed for shipping, not for ceremony. To give them as a gift, there are the recycled cardboard boxes for pumi.

Can I add a logo or initials?

Yes: a logo is added with the pumo personalisation. Initials are only possible on white and cream. For special requests, contact us.

Can I order large quantities?

Yes. Missing pieces are made specially. Payment is always required in advance. For very large orders, please contact us first.

What is the difference between sizes up to 12 cm and from 14 cm upwards?

Up to 12 cm the inner base is flat and unglazed; from 14 cm upwards it is hollow and glazed, with a hole. The larger the size, the more detailed the piece.

Do I need to register to order?

No. Choose size and quantity on the product, and in the cart you will see the full prices with discounts and the shipping cost: no registration required.
