The three finishes

The rooster is the most recognisable decoration in Apulian pottery: painted by hand, one at a time, in the traditional green and yellow. No two roosters are alike, and anyone who buys two plates notices at once. The speckled glaze is quieter: a pale ground flecked with green, at home on an everyday table. Natural brown is glazed clay with no decoration, the colour of the earth. It goes with anything, including a modern set.

What you actually need

For a full table, the 24 cm flat plate, the 23 cm soup plate and the 19 cm bowl are enough. The 19 cm flat plates work as dessert or starter plates; the small 9 cm bowls are the ones for olives and sauces. The sponza frise explains Salento eating better than anything else: a wide, shallow bowl of water where the frisella is dipped for a second and lifted straight out. Nothing more is needed.

Using them, washing them

Glazed terracotta takes the oven and the microwave, but not a sudden change of temperature: a plate straight from the oven must not go under cold water. Wash by hand, with little soap. Over time a dishwasher dulls the glaze and fades hand-painted decoration.

It will break, sooner or later

It is fired clay: one sharp knock and it cracks. That is why we ship in reinforced packaging and, if something arrives broken, we take care of it. Pieces can also be replaced one at a time, without starting the set again.
